The Impact Of Flexible Work Arrangements

What is Flexible Work Arrangement(FWA) and Its Representation In Sri Lanka

According to (Rau and Hyland.,2002 cited in Sekhar and Patwardhan,2021,pp4-5) FWAs can be defined as the “alternative work options that allow employees to accomplish outside of the temporal and spatial boundaries of a standard workday.” In that, employee spend part of their workweek working from home or an other remote location. Here, temporal flexibility and spatial flexibility are the two categories of FWAs.

Sekhar and Patwardhan.,2021 asserts that "Temporal flexibility" refers to FWAs that permit employees to adjust how many hours they work a week and what hours they work . Part-time or job sharing, flextime and compressed workweeks are examples of temporal flexibility. “Spatial flexibility” as an arrangement that enables an employee to work from a location outside of the traditional office or worksite. Examples of spatial flexibility comprise professional job autonomy, new working conditions and telecommuting. Spatial flexibility empowers employees to limit the hours they spend commuting; it also reduces workplace distraction and positively affects the work–life balance.

However when its comes to Sri lankan context; comprehensive national statistics on the prevalence and impact of FWAs across all industries are limited. However Industries like IT and related service providers, Online sales sectors have shown positive relationship towards the FWAs specially after the Covid 19 pandemic(Wikramasinhe and Jayabandu.,2023).
