Employee Retention Strategies to Reduce Employee Turnovers in Sri Lanka

 Employee retention is a critical factor in the success of any business, especially in Sri Lanka, where industries face challenges such as skilled labor shortages, economic fluctuations, and increasing job opportunities abroad (World Bank, 2023). High turnover rates can be costly, affecting productivity, morale, and business growth (Sri Lanka Labour Market Report, 2022).

Key Employee Retention Strategies 

1.Job Satisfaction Strategy

Attitude by workers towards their job. Attitude includes feelings, thoughts and beliefs as regards the job. Satisfaction from the job consists of individuals' attitudes and feelings regarding their job. This includes positive and negative, good and bad aspects of a particular job that are most likely to degenerate to being satisfied or dissatisfied or turnover intents. Concluded that perceived feelings of employees concerning their jobs and what they experience on the job entails job satisfaction. Employees' relationship with their supervisor, quality of workers, pay practice, and physical attributes of their environment can influence job satisfaction(Igbinoba el al(2022).

2. Training Strategy

In this strategy organisations need to invest in the employees in their establishment to obtain the required skills, knowledge and abilities that would empower them in a work environment that is rapidly changing.

3. Reward Strategy

Regular recognition boosts employee morale and loyalty. Companies should have structured reward systems, including appreciation programs, employee of the month initiatives, and monetary or non-monetary rewards for outstanding performance . Public recognition and incentives can enhance motivation and commitment.

4. Supervisory Support Strategy

This Strategy refers to the role that supervisors and managers play in creating a supportive work environment that enhances employee satisfaction, engagement, and retention. Employees who feel valued and supported by their supervisors are more likely to stay in their jobs and perform better.

5. Work Life Balance Strategy

A Work-Life Balance (WLB) strategy in employee retention refers to policies and practices that help employees maintain a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives. When employees feel they can effectively manage their work responsibilities while having time for personal and family commitments, they are more likely to stay engaged, productive, and loyal to their employer.

6. Employee Engagement Strategy

Creating a sense of belonging through employee engagement activities, team-building events, and workplace wellness programs fosters loyalty.Employees who feel connected to their workplace culture are less likely to seek opportunities elsewhere.


Conclusion

Reducing employee turnover in Sri Lanka requires a proactive approach to improving job satisfaction, professional growth, and workplace culture. By offering competitive compensation, career development, a positive work environment, and strong leadership, companies can build a committed and productive workforce that drives long-term success.
